| 27th March 2003Take any raised module and plant it out into any new rooting
environment – be it cold soil or a fresh peat bag –
and you’ll suffer from some degree of root die-back.
While there is little that can be done about the temperature or
soil moisture differences, you can prime the roots to get them ticking
over in their new environment.
Trials have shown that soaking or dipping trays in a dilute solution
Maxicrop– perhaps over night prior to planting – ensures
that the soil around the seedling’s roots is loaded with Maxicrop.
Researchers at the University of Strathclyde have confirmed that
this helps boost beneficial microbial activity around the root rhizosphere.
The end result is reduced root diseases, greater nutrient availability
and better
root growth.
The University of Bristol has recorded a doubling in root dry weight
in both lettuce and radish from applications made to seedlings.
In trials where lettuce and radish plants were exposed to both Rhizoctonia
solani and Pythium ultimum, Maxicrop improved plant survival by
90 and 30% respectively.
